The Pacific Crest Trail spans 2,256.5 miles and the entire west coast—from Canada to Mexico. It climbs nearly 60 major mountain passes and descends 19 canyons. Fewer people have thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail than have climbed Mt. Everest. Yesterday morning, Sam Fox completed his journey across the entire Pacific Crest Trail. It took Sam 56 days to complete the trail. That’s an average of 42.3 miles, or 14 to 16 hours of running, every single day.

Sam was inspired to run the PCT after his mother was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Sam’s goals were to call attention to the negative physical effects of neurological diseases and to raise and donate $250,000 to the Michael J. Fox Foundation and Parkinson’s research. To achieve these goals, Sam partnered with non-profit organization Run While You Can and several corporate sponsors, including Brooks. Sam also stated that he ran the trail to thank his mother for everything she has done for him.

In a video of Sam shortly before beginning the 2,256 mile run, Sam stated that he believes he’s “not the most gifted athlete that you’ll find,” but “you don’t have to be given in opportunity, you just have to believe you’re capable of something and then give it a try.”

Yesterday, Sam was featured on the Today Show and NBC Nightly News. NBC called Sam’s journey, “A grand gesture of a son’s love,” and stated that Sam pushed “unthinkable limits”. Run While You Can is currently creating a documentary film about Sam’s trek.
