Izaic Yorks

What made you want to get involved with the Special Olympics USA Games?

When I heard about the games being hosted here and Brooks’ involvement, I knew I had to help out in whatever capacity I could. Coming from a family with an intimate relationship in regards to disability and difference, I personally feel a draw to being apart of that community. When it comes to being involved, it is truly a privilege that I get to be around and work in tandem with the Special Olympics as the community they foster and grow is one of absolute vibrancy.

When it comes to being an Ambassador, what are you most excited about?

I personally believe that all humans are relational creatures, the degree to which we express or desire that is nuanced but relational we are. It’s in the relationships and stories that we will get to hear and join in on that is what makes it so exciting.

Through your work as an Ambassador to the Games, what do you hope your own community learns about Special Olympics and Special Olympics athletes?

I hope that the community just continues to add to the collective, cumulative knowledge of relation, community, and gratitude (specifically for how sport is a bridge).

Do you think it’s important the running community continue to emphasize inclusion? Why?

I actually think the running community is already great at inclusion, just from the encounters I have with all levels. People just think it’s rad to be together, share a story, and appreciate the vigor of exercise.

What made you want to get involved with the Special Olympics USA Games?

What I love about running is the power to connect with ourselves and others at a deep, almost instinctual level. It doesn’t matter who you are and how fast you are running, when you meet another person who shares your same passion there is an instant connection. When I met [Brooks elite runners and Special Olympics athletes] Colleen and Andy, I was immediately inspired by their excitement about competing at the highest level and getting the best out of themselves, the same ideals that the Beasts and I try to bring to the track everyday.

It’s an honor to come along side them in their journey, get a glimpse into their lives and hear their stories about the things they have accomplished like Andy being a torch bearer in the Olympics and competing in numerous marathons around the country! Wow!

When it comes to being an Ambassador, what are you most excited about?

I am most excited to watch Andy and Colleen compete!

Through your work as an Ambassador to the Games, what do you hope your own community learns about Special Olympics and Special Olympics athletes?

I would hope that everyone involved is impacted as much by the athletes’ incredible spirit of determination as I have been by Colleen and Andy.

Do you think it’s important the running community continue to emphasize inclusion? Why?

Absolutely. What these athletes are accomplishing is incredible. I hope they take the time to listen to these athletes stories because if they do, they can’t help but be inspired!
