For those of us running a St. Patty’s Day Dash this weekend, there are tons of great pre-race strategies available out there, but in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, I asked a few Brooks employees what their less rational rituals are.
Here are a few ways they make sure they run lucky. See if you can figure out which one of these runs ultra-marathons (it’s not hard).
The day of the race I have oatmeal for breakfast with a banana. I also wear the same hair clips and I have to talk to my mom before the race no matter what. It calms my nerves.

The only thing I am super crazy about is putting on a clean singlet. I don’t put on my race singlet until 10 minutes until the start. That way it is clean and dry. Nothing makes me feel fast like a clean, dry singlet.

For some of my bigger and longer races, I’d eat five Snickers bars and wash it down with a 32 oz. Gatorade. I’d also pair this with some of the fiercest death-metal my ears could handle at 4 a.m. It’s a good way to get the blood pumping when you shouldn’t be awake for another three hours!

I avoid wearing new items that I have never run in before, clothing or shoes. I want to make sure I don’t get annoyed by fabric or the feel of the materials.

The morning of, I have mantra’s that I tell myself (pre-thought-up mantras that I can easily access in my brain) such as, “pain is temporary,” “pain is about seeing how mentally tough you are,” “learn to suffer,” “you can do this,” “you will do this,” “one foot in front of the other,” and the list goes on.

One race ritual to always fall back on is to Run Happy. It works like a charm.
