Vacuums & Running Together at Last!

Almost exactly seven years ago, Peter Asciutto received a phone call that changed his life. A call that stated his job as a vacuum sales rep was being eliminated. After unsuccessfully searching for another vacuum sales rep job, Peter decided it was time for plan B.

Peter had worked as a sales rep for 15 years, but was passionate about running, so he decided to open a store that combined what he knew (the vacuum industry) with what he loved (running), and Vac and Dash was born! The only place in Albemarle, NC where one can purchase both running shoes and a vacuum cleaner. And according to Peter, customers occasionally purchase both at the same time.

“When we first opened the store up, it was such an unusual combination that it drove people to the store to see what it was all about,” said Peter. “Our mission is to promote the sport of running by making it fun.”

To achieve this mission, Vac And Dash organizes several community races, such as the Waffle House Run. “We run from one Waffle House to the other and back,” said Peter, “It’s one of the free runs I organize and we give away free t-shirts…The last one we had a record crowd of 65 runners.”

Vac N Dash also organizes a Fellowship of the Idiot Run, a 19.7 mile route, an April Fools Day 5k Race, and a Tour de Elvis 5k & Cycle Tour. The April Fools Day 5k Race or the “500,000 Centimeter Classic” (a 5k), “is a unique race that is full of pranks… This year we are going to name the race after a pre-registered runner,” said Peter.

The Tour de Elvis 5k is held to raise money for the local Park and Recreations Departments.

While these races are a big hit in the local community, Peter has yet to organize a race that involves running with vacuum cleaners.
